Federica Di Cesare graduated in July 2015 in Veterinary Medicine at the University of Milan, with a thesis entitled “Positive and negative acute phase proteins assessment in dogs affected by B and T lymphoma at different clinical stage” (Supervisor: Dr. Alessia Giordano; Assistant supervisor: Prof. Saverio Paltrinieri).
The year before graduation she attended the Surgery and Radiology Unit at Azienda Polo Universitario Veterinario di Lodi, where she collaborated to clinical activities as student intern. In particular, her work was focused on anesthesia and analgesia of both companion and food producing animals during diagnostic and surgical procedures.
Now, she is working at the Unit of Veterinary Pharmacology, Dept. Health, Animal Science and Food Safety, University of Milan, where she started a PhD program in October 2015. Her research interest are mainly focused on antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, analgesic and anesthetic drugs classical and population pharmacokinetics.


After his degree in Veterinary Medicine at the University of Milan in 1989, Roberto Edoardo Villa obtained a PhD in Veterinary Pharmacology and Toxicology at the University Federico II in Naples in 1993. He is currently associate professor of Veterinary Pharmacology and Toxicology at the Department of Health, Animal Science and Food Safety (VESPA) of the University of Milan.
His research interest are focused on experimental pharmacokinetics/pharmacodynamics of drugs used in veterinary medicine (mainly antibacterial and anti-inflammatory drugs).
In quality of expert for safety, pharmacokinetics/pharmacodynamics and residue depletion of substances used in animal production is member of the following Committees:
• Italian Commission for Veterinary Medicinal Products (CCFV) Ministero della Salute, Roma Italia.
• Scientific Panel on Additives and Products or Substances used in Animal Feed (FEEDAP) European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), Parma Italy.
• Safety Working Group of the Committee for Veterinary Medicinal Products (CVMP) – European Medicine Agency (EMA), London UK.

Research Project:
Population or classical pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic approach to reconsider the therapeutic protocols of antimicrobial, antinflammatory and analgesic drugs within clinical/surgical activities

The pharmacokinetic of a drug refers to how it is handled by the body and this includes absorption, distribution, metabolism and elimination. Classical pharmacokinetic is focused on predicting drug concentration in the individual animal. The veterinarian must select a drug dose based on numerous factors inherent to the therapeutic scenario at hand to maximize therapeutic efficacy and minimize the likelihood of drug‐induced toxicity or induction of microbial resistance.

Population pharmacokinetic studies aim to identify and quantify causes of variability in drug concentration in the patient population. Associations between patient characteristics and differences in pharmacokinetics can then be used to customize pharmacotherapy.
Therefore, population kinetics provide clinicians with useful information in order to choose the proper treatment dosage, considering the different pathological/physiological status, trying simultaneously to customize the therapy, limit adverse effects and, for antimicrobials, control the development of antimicrobial resistance.
The aim of the project is, applying classical and population kinetic models, to redefine the dosages (also off label) of some specific antimicrobials (cefazolin and gentamicin) and antinflammatory (meloxicam and cimicoxib) drugs in different animal populations considering their pathological/physiological status, to reduce/control antibacterial resistance and adverse effects.

A second goal of this study is to develop a consolidated set of guidelines for population PK analyses in veterinary medicine.
Research activities will be carried out between the clinical/surgical unit (where samples will be collected) and pharmacological unit (where samples will be processed and analyzed).
The subjects included in the study will be dogs, cats and horses of different breed, age, gender and weight, both healthy and suffering from various disease, submitted to the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the University of Milan or to Azienda Polo Universitario Veterinario di Lodi in order to undergo various types of surgeries.
From these animals blood and urine will be collected at prefixed times during the recovery period in our structures. Then these samples will be analyzed with HPLC techniques for measuring active compounds concentrations in biological fluids.
Subsequently, on drugs concentrations classic or population kinetic models for determination of kinetic profile and parameters will be applied.
