Stem cell researchers and schools get together at the UniStem Day 2012

Meetings in 20 cities. 9,000 high school students. Stem cells like you've never seen before.

“Italy united by Science” is the slogan of the UniStem Day 2012, the dissemination event that will involve more than 9,000  students from 160 high schools in 20 cities for an entire day on Friday 9th March.

The event is a organised by UniStem, the Centre for Stem Cell Research at the University of Milan and is sponsored by EU projects NeurostemCell and EuroStemCell.

The “UniStem Days” take place every year since 2009 with mounting success. This years’ edition is unprecedented for the number of participants and cities involved (the previous  edition involved 4 locations) and, for the first time, it covers all Italian regions from north to south, hence the slogan “Italy united by Science”.

Friday’s UniStem Day will be  the largest dissemination initiative about stem cells in Italy, so far, and a major one in the EU.

Twenty Universities in different cities will host a range of dissemination activities that include lessons and meetings with researchers, visits to the laboratories, games, videos, dance, and music.

Students will also have an opportunity to meet world-class athletes like Daniele Gilardoni (11-times rowing world champion), Paolo Rossi (1982 FIFA World Cup winner) and others, and discuss with them the many similarities between doing excellent research and professional sport.

We are so happy to transmit to the new generations the passion and enthusiasm for scientific work and for the fascinating world of stem cells, ” says Elena Cattaneo, co-founder of UniStem and coordinator of Neurostemcell project.

The event opens at 9,00 AM, preceded by a message of salutation from the President of Italy Giorgio Napolitano.
