The Neuroscience School of Advanced Studies NSAS welcomes you to the XIII century Convento di Sant’Agostino in Cortona, Tuscany, the town celebrated in the book and movie “Under the Tuscan Sun”.

Inside the lecture rooms and around the fascinating atmosphere of the convent cloister the world’s leading investigators will discuss upcoming scientific challenges with a small, highly selected number of participants in a unique setting, nestled within the most idyllic Tuscan countryside.

The first course Neural Stem Cells in Development and for Brain Repair,  is taking place on May 2013 (4-12). UniStem  allocated a grant to partecipate to this course. The winner han been Sarah E. Hirsch, Ph.D. student  in dr.Chris Fasano’s laboratory of University at Albany, School of Public Health Neural Stem Cell Institute Albany, NY. She was selected between  42 candidates from  13 different countries, as Sweden, India, Chile, USA, Iran, France, Spain.

«As a new investigator with limited resources, having excellent students can really help establish and drive a newly formed research program. Since Sarah joined the lab in 2011, she has been that person» wrote dr. Chris Fasano into reference letter.

The 5^th edition of the UniStem Day, taking place on March 15^th in Italy, Spain and the UK, will be dedicated to the “scientific passion of Rita Levi-Montalcini”, who sadly passed away last December.

She was a Nobel Prize winner for Medicine, senator, and she established the EBRI Foundation (European Brain Research Institute) in 2002, at the age of 93. Rita Levi-Montalcini dedicated her life to scientific research and has been an extraordinary role model for women and science.

In 1947 she was invited by Viktor Hamburger to collaborate with him at the Washington University in Saint Louis. During her years in America, Rita Levi-Montalcini discovered the nerve growth factor (Ngf), that she isolated together with Stanley Cohen in 1954. In 1986 she won The Nobel Prize for Medicine  thanks to this discovery.

One of Rita Levi-Montalcin’s last endeavors was the establishment of the EBRI Foundation in 2002. Her idea was to create a center for scientific excellence able to attract both foreign and Italian researchers. The EBRI’s research activity is mainly based on the study of the fundamental molecular and cellular mechanisms of neurons and synapses involved in the cerebral areas studied, by integration of a multidisciplinary approach.

The EBRI foundation has made a short film available for the event that will be screened during UniStem Day 2013.

There’ll be lots of live tweets from all the different locations involved in this year’s events. A group of students from the journalism school “Walter Tobagi” at the University of Milan is following the event for the whole day and will share what’s happening in Milan. But that’s not all! You’ll be able to catch all the key moments of UniStem 2013 through tweets from other Italian Regions and from participating European cities.

This year the dissemination event on stem cell research addressed to high school students, is dedicated to the “scientific passion of Rita Levi-Montalcini” and will take place simultaneously in 34 Italian Universities as well as in 7 universities in Spain and the United Kingdom.

The event involves more than 250 high schools with the involvement of 15,000 students and more than 200 researchers, managers, clinicians, communicators, ethicists, technicians and many others are among those involved in this scientific dissemination event, made unique by the great enthusiam and participation.

Special features include guests such as Marco Paolini, an actor, director and writer recognised for his high-impact civil, social and scientific narratives, who will speak live from the University of Milan and will be broadcasted to the other locations via real-time streaming.

Furthermore new to this exciting 5^th edition of the UniStem Day will be a detailed moment-by-moment Twitter feed held by the Walter Tobagi Journalism School of the University of Milan, as well as the official UniStem Facebook page, both of which will be continuously updated on the ongoing events.

We are pleased to announce that Prof Peter W Andrews and Prof Harry Moore, in collaboration with Prof Maneesha Inamdar of the Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research, India, will be running a joint India/UK symposium on Human Pluripotent Stem Cells: Progress to Therapy. Contributions from Developmental Biology.

The past 15 years have seen a rapid growth in interest in human pluripotent stem cells, first embryonic stem cells and, more recently, induced pluripotent stem cells, not only for regenerative medicine but also for toxicology, disease modelling and drug discovery. Development of these applications depends on our fundamental understanding of how such cells make fate decisions between self-renewal on the one hand, and differentiation into distinct lineages on the other.

Considerable progress has already been made and, today, applications in all of these areas are now on the horizon, and some clinical trials for regenerative medicine have begun. However, much still remains to be done, and our knowledge of the mechanisms that guide development of the embryo is central to understanding how to manipulate pluripotent stem cells.

In this meeting we will bring together key researchers from India and the UK to discuss the progress in developing applications for pluripotent human stem cells and to address how developmental biology is contributing to that progress

Don’t worry if you missed it in 2012! Unistem Day comes back, and it is going to be  even more exciting. A fascinating trip into stem cell research to understand what stem cells are and what being a researcher means.

On March 15th 2013, 15.000 students from Italy and Europe will get together to participate at UniStem Day 2013.

UniStem Day event was first held in 2009 to connect high school students with researchers, and it is getting bigger and bigger. The 2013 edition dissolves the boundaries of stem cell knowledge and spreads across Europe, with the participation of 6 Spanish Universities (Universitat de Barcelona will lead the Spanish event) and the University of Edinburgh in Scotland, UK. The event is happening simultaneously at 9AM all across Europe.

Each participating University will have its own special program which comprises of talks from scientists, ethicists, clinicians in the field and hands-on activities in the afternoon, when labs open the doors and show what research is in every-day life.

Not only labs though, as UniStem Day 2013 is a 360° trip in stem cell science: students will be involved in games, discussions, films and open workshops with science communicators and sociologists in the perspective of a multi-layered approach to scientific knowledge.

UniStem Day

This year the event will span the European stage and will involve no less than 15,000 high school students at 35 different Italian universities plus simultaneous events in Spain and Scotland.
